It’s manageable. I think the child has just as much fun (maybe more) than at a huge 25-30 kid party which, I think is overwhelming for the parents for sure and also for the child. Family centered parties are nice too.

Sometimes we do a big party for the kids, but often I suggest a “mini” party. This is a party where the birthday child gets to pick 2-4 kids to invite over. The kids just play and do whatever they feel like doing, so no pressure to organize games. We eat a meal together, it is usually the birthday child’s favorite dinner food. I make a cake and we sing happy birthday and everyone goes home. It is a celebration that involves friends, but it isn’t overwhelming or stressful. 🙂

I see and hear the pressure amongst some of my family members. Fortunately, my husband and I share the same beliefs and wants when it comes to birthdays. Our children (5 and 2) have not had a birthday party from us yet. I say from us because my in-laws have done a couple for our 5-year-old, but nothing huge or elaborate. What we’ve unintentionally made a tradition in our household is to make a birthday cake with our kids the night before their birthday. Our kids get to choose the theme, we look up different designs, and figure out how to make it happen … with the birthday boy or girl’s help. My 5-year-old loves this tradition and looks forward to it every year.
